EBARR was founded in 2008. It was born out of the belief that there was a need in the community for a high quality rescue group that accepts cats and dogs (under certain conditions) from the community. Since our inception we have had thousands of adoptions of orphaned animals; many community surrenders and cats and dogs that were at risk of being euthanized at the local animal shelters.
Our Mission at East Bay Animal Rescue & Refuge (EBARR) is to provide a home for animals in need. We believe in the health and welfare of all animals and we never discriminate against breed or size.
"Our goal is to reduce abuse of animals and prevent more animals from entering shelters."
— Nicole Martinez, President of EBARR
We’ve overcome many obstacles and can now proudly say we’re stable. There is still a very challenging job ahead of us, but we continue to hold our heads up high and do what we do.
With every animal saved and every animal who finds a forever home, we know there are hundreds who aren't so fortunate. This heartbreaking fact motivates our work and fills us with the resolve to move past every challenge in our way.
Despite experiencing a major leadership transition in 2016, as well as losing our boarding facility, we never gave up on any of the animals in our care and are proud to say that each one went to a home.
Saved over 300 animals in 2017
Saved countless animals in the community at risk of severe medical issues in the near future.
Started an adult cat program, in 2017, to help cats who generally slip through the cracks at adoption events. They now get highlighted and have the chance to get into the forever homes that they deserve.
Intervened early to stop puppies from maturing and producing more unwanted litters.
Over 100 adoptions during 2016 (despite this being the hardest year in EBARR history).
We have overcome major obstacles to save this rescue over the last 4 years by continually putting our needs aside for the good of EBARR. We believe we are needed in this community of animals and animal lovers.

As part of our family; all animals receive training, socialization, a full veterinary package, love, and affection. We will also serve as an adoption option and educational resource for the community. Our goal is to one day open an animal refuge in California for all animals in need of a home.
